January 23rd 2018, at SHIMANO BIKE NYC

Back in August 2017, we had the pleasure of hosting Olympic Winner and Professional Track Cyclist Nelson Vails for an interactive workshop and Q&A here at SHIMANO BIKE NYC. It was great to hear from him first-hand about his personal history as a professional cyclist along with his lifelong commitment to The Shimano Family and its contributions to the cycling community in New York City.

Nelson was our secret guest for the weekly evening ride with Rapha on the day before his workshop and after a ride around the city, we had a great time chatting over some beer and snacks. And on the next day, we welcomed 60 attendees to his workshop.

A Little About Nelson

Nelson grew up in the Harlem projects and is widely recognized across the world as the first African-American to win an Olympic Silver Medal in cycling at the 1984 Track Sprint. He first started winning races in the Central Park which ultimately earned him a spot on the U.S. Olympic cycling team.

Since retirement in 1995, Nelson has worked as a commentator for races on major TV networks and has even tried his hand at acting in Kevin Bacon’s NYC bike messenger movie “Quicksilver.” Nelson’s story is truly inspirational and shows that anything is possible if you put your mind and heart to it. He beat enormous odds to become one of the best cyclists in the world with only a dream and two wheels.

Recap of the event and Q&A

It was great getting a chance to sit down with Nelson and picking his brain about his experience at SHIMANO BIKE NYC to increase cycling safety and enjoyment.

Here is a snippet of the conversation:

How was your experience at Shimano Bike NYC?

My SHIMANO BIKE NYC event and NYC homecoming visit was a big hit in the local cycling community. If we can do it again in the summer of 2018, we would have more time to promote and bring awareness to SHIMANO BIKE NYC location.

Could you tell us your relationship with Shimano?

I am a long time Shimano Cycling Ambassador Worldwide.

How do you think we can encourage more people in NYC to ride the bike safely and enjoyably?

Create a weekly SHIMANO BIKE NYC Slow Roll Event hosted by Nelson Vails.
